“Game of the Year Award” winning industry veteran will lead game design at the Berlin-based social mobile games developer
GameDuell has won the games industry veteran Howard Phillips as Head of Game Design and User Experience. In this role he will direct all game design projects and teams of the Berlin-based company. Renowned for being Nintendo’s first “Game Master” in North America, and winning two “Game of the Year” awards – one for “Infinity Blade” on iOS as Studio Manager in 2010 and one for “Shadow Complex” on Xbox Live Arcade as Executive Producer in 2009 – he is regarded as one of the most prominent icons in the worldwide games industry. Howard Phillips has designed and/or produced over 165 games and formally evaluated over 1,000 game productions.
With 10 years of experience in leading positions at Nintendo of America, 10 years at Microsoft, two years at THQ, two years at Epic Games/Chair Entertainment, and one year at Lucas Arts, Howard Phillips possesses deep expertise in mobile and console game design and development, which includes creative direction, strategic planning, business development, as well as studio and project management. “We are so honoured having Howard Phillips join our team as another inspiring lead figure. He will boost the production of our new generation of social and mobile games to a new level”, comments Todd English, Head of the Game Production Studio at GameDuell, on the hiring.
One of the world’s most prominent games industry veterans
From 2011 to 2014 before joining GameDuell, Howard Phillips was a consultant to major international games companies in the areas of game design, development, analysis, and refinement. In 2009 and 2010 he was
Studio Director at Epic Games/Chair Entertainment, where he was responsible for all aspects of the development studio including design and production of the award winning “Infinity Blade”, the first game that demonstrated the power of the Unreal Engine on the iPhone. During his time at Microsoft from 1997 to 2006, Howard Phillips led the sports game business as Product Unit Manager as well as the RACING studio and select LIFE studio titles as Design Manager. As Design Director for the Advanced Strategies and Policies group, he was responsible for all aspects of user-experience design and the refinement of the Incubation Project.
From 1995 to 1996, Howard Phillips was Vice President for Product Development at Splash Studios, Director of the West Coast Development at Absolute Entertainment from 1993 to 1994, and Vice President for Software Development at THQ from 1991 to 1993. In 1991, he coordinated the games and learning products for Lucas Arts as Creative Directorand Executive Producer. Between 1981 and 1991 he was Director, Game Creative and Product Analyst for Nintendo of America. During this time, he was acting as Nintendo’s spokesperson for the game community and was also co-editing the Nintendo Power Magazine – adored for the famous “Howard & Nester” comic series, where Phillips was constantly depicted wearing his iconic bow ties.
